Marshall was mining at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California when on January 24, 1848, he struck gold.  News spread like wildfire and within a short time, over 300,000 people invaded California from across the U.S. and overseas.  The American economy surged with all that gold, and California quickly became a state in 1850.  Here's to all those hardy souls packing shovels.
